Band of Outsiders - Spring 2011 - Review

Beach umbrellas, bunks and ping pong tables acted as the backdrop for Scott Sternberg's Spring 2011 presentation for Band of Outsiders. It appears as if his muse is hitting the beach in the South of France before heading off to summer camp, and then back to New York for a quick game at SPiN before the drive out to the Hamptons for Labor Day.

Band of Outsiders has made its mark on the fashion industry as the go to for school boy blazers, polo shirts, and generally preppy tongue in cheek, sophisticated garments. This collection managed to both live up to expectations as well as expand with new offerings that are sure to be a hit with the Band of Outsiders customer (i.e. me), come Spring.

Their signature plaid shirts and striped polos were paired with the usual shorts, anoraks, and boat shoes in mostly primary colors, though, there were a few new pieces to shake things up. A suede varsity jacket was an unexpected and delightful side note, while a black leather jacket looked like effortless summer city chic with matching black drawstring shorts and bright yellow boat shoes. Lest we forget the pocket henleys, which are sure to become a hipster staple come March.

Of course the prices are always outrageous, but the Band of Outsiders man will always have that X factor: His pants are cuffed just so, his colors are somewhat mismatched, and he wears the Sperry collaboration boat shoes everywhere, and looks great doing it all. My experience with the brand has accumulated in this realization: "Don't underestimate a great polo shirt."

SPLURGE - Band of Outisders x Sperry Top-Siders - Around $195

Every season for a while now, Band of Outsiders has done a collaboration with Sperry Top-Sider. Band takes the classic boat shoe model and remixes it to produce a modern version, whether that be through the use of a strange fabric or a new silhouette, and, of course, charges about three times the original boat shoe price. As always, Top-Siders are one of the most well designed and durable shoes out there, and with Scott Sternberg's creative touch, they become some of the chicest shoes as well.

This fall offers styles in corduroy, shearling, nylon, and wool. I'm partial to the gray wool ones myself, but who can say they don't want to at least see the shearling ones in person? Spurge.

LOOKBOOK - Band of Outsiders - Fall 2010

One of my favorite menswear brands, Band Of Outsiders, has just released their Fall 2010 lookbook. Polaroids are shot in their informal and cadid style, and the looks are preppy with a modern twist, all classic Band of Outsiders. Though the price tags on most of these items are likely to be hefty, those looking for the perfect blue blazer or rugby shirt are sure to find the perfect fit in an option from Band of Outsiders. Find the full lookbook on their website.

4TH OF JULY SPLURGE - Band of Outsiders Polos and Orlebar Brown+ Swimsuits - $175 and $215

Happy 4th! I decided I would put together these three patriotic looks together to get in the spirit of things. The Band of Outsiders polos are the perfect beach shirt, and the Orlebar Brown+ shorts are a great quick dry swim suit that look sharp in and out of the water. Splurge.

Now get off the computer, get out to the beach, eat, drink, and watch some damn fireworks.
