Apologies for the lack of posting over the past couple of weeks. Vacation left us without phones or computers, and though the break was well deserved and incredibly relaxing, we are back in the thick of things and ready to work.

In other news, we have decided to leave our site at nattynyc.blogspot.com in search of a more creative and efficient blogging outlet. That means that the old site (the one you are on now) will remain as an archive, but new posts will be created on our new site on tumblr (LINK). We hope you like the new digs!

SAVE - New Balance for J. Crew 1400 Sneaker - $130

I still have fond memories of my first pair of grey New Balance sneakers from when I was a kid. They go with everything and add a sporty but sophisticated look to any outfit.

This 1400 model, a special collaboration between New Balance and J. Crew (available only at J. Crew) that was originally only available in Japan, comes in both green and navy suede. Additionally, these sneakers are hand made in the USA and are extremely comfortable. And trust me, they only get better with age. Save.

TO SPLURGE OR TO SAVE - Jeans

The denim market has been flooded in the last 10 years. While Levi's still holds its role as mascot of the denim industry and luxury designers continue to produce overpriced denim offerings, "Premium jean" (jeans priced at above $100) startups, such as 7 For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, and Ernest Sewn to name a few, have infiltrated the market with niche styles and high fashion connections, and emerged with huge profits and expansion in the way of additional categories beyond denim that have allowed them to become powerful lifestyle brands.

7 For All Mankind is a great example. Started in 2002 in Los Angeles, their sales quickly climbed to $13 million dollars in their first year through both celebrity and media endorsements. Over the years, they have seen their offerings expand to product categories including women's, men's, and kid's sportswear, handbags, and footwear. A trip to Bloomingdales' No. 59 Metro is sure to convince you of both their denim domination as well as their growing sportswear and accessory presence.

For more aspirational brands like Gucci, Prada, and Armani, jeans have become an introductory item that serve to allow the consumer to feel a part of a larger luxury world while giving the brand the opportunity to splash their label and logo all over the behinds of their customers, effectively making them walking advertisements.

There has also been a demand for better quality, design, and materials in denim, prompting an increase in prices. While there are those denim devotees out there that are willing to spend upwards of $800 on a pair of jeans (coughBALMAINcough), I believe that it is entirely possible to find a great pair with an excellent fit and superior dye for anywhere from $40.

Below, I have assembled a collection of my four favorite pairs (dark and slim, just how I like em'). Personally, I would never spend more than $250 on denim, so you won't see any of those "hand ripped" or "limited edition dye" pairs here. That said, I am fully aware that $250 is a large sum to spend on a garment that has its roots in durable workwear, so I have a range. In addition, I follow a strict "no branding" policy (the less labels and logos the better), so all pairs depicted have little to none of it.

Of course, if you guys have an horror stories, suggestions, comments, or questions, let me know. I own a pair of each of these, so I would be happy to address any concerns.

Vince Slim Leg Jeans - $195 (on sale for $117!)

Pro: Super comfortable, excellent fit, and no branding whatsoever

Con: Doesn't take wear too well (rips and holes will ensure with a few weeks of wear), and the price...

7 For All Mankind "Slimmy" Jean - $159

Pro: Comfort and durability

Con: Branding and minimal fading

J. Crew 484 Slim Jean - $98

Pro: Cheap, great fit, and no branding

Con: A little uncomfortable, but I'm sure they will break in with time

Levi's 510 Super Skinny Jean - $54

Pro: SUPER cheap and great fit

Con: Comfort is an issue and there is the classic Levi's swoosh and red tab on the back pockets

SPLURGE - Christopher Fischer Andres V Neck Sweater - $325

My apologies for my inactivity of late. I've had a crazy couple of weeks finishing up school and preparing for winter break and the holiday season. I will be celebrating Christmas tomorrow as I am leaving for vacation early this year. While I am a little bummed that I'm missing Christmas in NYC, I am pumped for my impending trip, which as you may have gleaned from the title, is an excursion to Barcelona and then a cruise down the Nile in Egypt.

If the combination seems a little strange to you, it is. After planning an epic trip to Egypt, I convinced the crew that we had to hit at least one major city. After we all agreed upon Barcelona, it was decided to depart a few days earlier and spend the holidays in España. I've heard great things about both places, so I am beyond excited, but at the same time, I'm facing a little bit of a dilemma: How do I pack?!

While Egypt will be scorching hot deserts, Barcelona is going to be a bit cooler with temperatures around 40-50. To top off this little "climate crisis," I'm only allowed to bring a small carry-on (see picture above) for the entire 10 days!

Of course, I have taken the necessarily steps and made my Christmas wishes with this trip in mind, and I will now share with you what I have devised. Please, if anyone has any recommendations or insight, let me know. Enjoy!

J. Crew, Vintage Slim Fit Jeans - $98

Though a little stiff at first, I'm sure these faded slim jeans will break in quite nicely after a couple days wear in Barcelona.

James Perse, Cargo Pant - $295

(This is just an idea of what they look like because the slim, green pair I bought at their store in the West Village is not available online)

These pants have a superior fit, and the cargo pockets will be great for holding guide books and cameras while we're strolling across the Egyptian sands.

NUMBER: Lab, Henley - $39 (on Gilt.com)

Great for chilly days in Barcelona over a t-shirt or under a blazer, and sans t-shirt in Egypt with white Jeans.

Elizabeth & James, Pocket Printed Sweater - $115 (on Gilt.com)

To cover up on a windy day on the boat in Egypt.

Picked this up at the Theory Sample sale (at about 70% off) for Christmas dinner in Barcelona.

Superga, Classic - $69

This timeless shoe is versatile and comfortable, both for strolling around the city and hanging on the boat.

Steven Alan, Reverse Seam Shirt - $168

Steven Alan's famous rinkle-and-wear shirts will be suited for the overall casual style of both destinations.

Super, Peoples Sunglasses - $174

A pair of shades are a must for this trip in particular, and these are damn cool. That said, I do usually pack more than one pair...

J. Crew, Sun Faded Stanton Short - $59.90

You can't find a better fitting short than this pair from J.Crew. Trust me, I've tried. Since I probably won't have room for more than one pair, I'm opting for the faded blue over the usual khaki, which looks great with a white t-shirt or a striped button down.

SCP, Cashmere Hoodie - $255

This hoodie will be great for layering under a blazer at night for warmth, or over a t-shirt during the day.

Theory, Stripe Polo - $75

This polo is classic and branding free, which is surprisingly hard to find in a nice polo shirt these days.

Etro, Gauze Scarf - $235

Very European and chic.

Velvetmen, Crew neck T-Shirt - $41 (on sale)

All those interested in the little billion-dollar-a-year industry that is fashion should pick up the second issue of Industrie magazine. Focusing on the real movers and shakers, Industrie manages to create a glossy devoid of celebrity stories (outside of fashion) and shopping guides, and full of informative articles and interesting profiles on the people, places, and things behind the scenes of the "garmento" business. Enjoy this quick flip through of the magazine to get an idea for what it's all about.

SAVE - Lark and Wolff by Steven Alan Waxed Country Jacket - $198

It appears this is the year of diversification at Steven Alan. Adding on to an already lengthy list of collaborations with brands and stores like Dockers, Chari & Co. Bike Store, and Warby Parker Eyewear, Mr. Alan has done a collaboration line by the name of Lark & Wolff for the hipster chain store Urban Outfitters. Alan manages to achieve a significantly lower price point while still retaining his signature rinkled-cool aesthetic in garments that don't stray far form what he is offering in his full price line.

From a quick review of his website, you would see that the Waxed Country Jacket I have suggested here is a fine example of this fact. Reminiscent of a classic Barbour waxed cotton jacket, this piece is an affordable substitute with a slim cut and simple look. And, like I said, it also happens to resemble his Rain Slicker, which runs around $330. Save.

SPLURGE and SAVE - Theory Sample Sale

Hurry down today to snag a suit or tuxedo (around $350), a sports jacket (around $150), dress pants, dress shirts, sweaters (around $100), winter accessories, and even a few racks of outerwear and jeans. There is a HUGE selection with racks and racks organized by size, a helpful staff, and spacious dressing rooms. Theory makes amazing dresswear that will slim almost any body shape, so don't miss out!

WEEKDAY WATCHING - Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2011 Video ft. Scott Campbell

Scott Campbell, the famed New York City skin and multimedia artist, is the star of this promotional video by Louis Vuitton to showcase their Spring/Summer 2011 collection, to which Campbell lent his vision. As I mentioned in my review of the collection a few months back, while some of the wears bordered on "Ed Hardy-esque" with Campbell's tattoo inspired etchings spilled across them, his group of accessories were stunning. In this video we are able to examine more closely the fine detailing and design that goes into a Louis Vuitton product. Enjoy.

SPLURGE - Moncler x VISVIM Down Jacket - $618

This simple and stylish jacket is exactly what you would expect from a collaboration between the luxury ski jacket supplier Moncler and the Japanese streetwear fashion authority VISVIM. Moncler's classic shape is updated with a clean design in a beautiful blue grey that should look good with most anything.

While those label-whores among us will be upset to find that the Moncler logo has been dialed down to merely a white silhouette of its former self, I for one am happy to see an absence of branding alongside a strong presence of style and sophistication. Splurge.

In preparation for a semester school I am attending for the Spring on the coast of Maine, I decided it was time to buy my first pair of waterproof boots. In addition to being durable and functional in all types of climates and conditions, I wanted a good looking pair that would still be wearable on the streets of New York.

After a quick stop at Uniqlo yesterday, I headed down the block to Eastern Mountain Sports (on the corner of Broadway and Spring) and found these Sorel Woodbine™ High CVS Boots for a great price of $120.

Like it says on their website, these boots were designed to be the "ultimate urban rain boot."Apart from the obvious technical details that protect from snow, sleet, and rain, the interior of the boot is also lined with recycled felt to keep your feet insulated and warm. With a simplistic black color scheme and a red sole for a little pop of color, I am 100% pleased with the look, feel, and functionality of these boots. Save.

SPLURGE - Wings + Horns Vest - $495

Upon further investigation, I discovered that the Penfield piece I suggested in my last vest post was actually not the world's most flattering garment. In lieu of my mistake, I have decided to supply you guys with another option from Wings + Horns that is possibly one of the chicest gilets I have ever laid eyes on.

Wings + Horns began as the in-house brand for a Canadian manufacturer with a specialty in high-end fleece basics. Today, they produce a full range of menswear with an emphasis on solid construction and Japanese influenced design.

I've been eyeing this piece for a while in my search for a great Fall/Winter vest, and decided that I would finally treat myself to it this holiday season. Taking advantage of yesterday's Black Friday offers, I was able to procure it for 20% off on Blackbird, which made the purchase even more exciting.

The vest is a beautiful color speckled wool with duck down stuffing, shawl collar, two patch pockets, and two smaller button down ones. The fit and comfort are unparalleled, and along with all of the details and features, make this garments worth the rather large price tag. Splurge.

Plaid Please

Plaid should be your best friend come Fall/Winter. Whether it's in shirts, pants, bags, scarves, whatever, it's all good. And don't be afraid to look a little woodsy, just stay away from anything that makes you look like you just drove a 16 wheeler cross country...

I threw in the skirt because A) Who saw the insane Glee spread this shot originated from? and B) Who doesn't love a good plaid skirt?

SAVE - Converse JP Zipper HI - $100

Myself, I don't own a pair of Converse. I know, it's ridiculous. The white high tops are really the most basic, basic of any man's wardrobe. Well that is all about to change. I have my eye on these white zipper hi-top Jack Purcells at Aloha Rag, and at only $100, I don't imagine it will be long before there are safely at home in my closet.

With a textured suede and canvas outside, tan leather lining, and a quirky zipper running down the center, these aren't your regular old Converse. I'm not one to follow the pack, which is probably why I have subconsciously resisted Converse in the past, so these are perfect for me. Save.

SAVE - L.L.Bean Signature Fair Isle Zip Cardigan - $119

I originally saw this piece at the Pop Up Flea, but they didn't have any left in my size. At $119, I wasn't exactly surprised. This zip up Fair Isle cardigan will be a cool edition to my Fall/ Winter wardrobe to spice up that dark jean, plaid shirt, navy coat ensemble I have been frequenting in the cooler weather we have been experiencing lately. Of course L.L. Bean stands for durability, so don't think the low price is too good to be true. Save.

While the jacket may be designed for the avid cyclist, that certainly isn't going to stop me from checking out this stylish jacket. Save.

SHOPPING DIARIES - November 21, 2010

Today I headed downtown to Soho with a friend of mine to get some brunch at Delicatessen (the Texas Eggs Benedict is unreal) and do some shopping

First we headed to the Pop Up Flea Market by A Continuous Lean, and it was a huge success! The place was pretty crowded (see above) and the booths were really well curated and appealing (see below for a photo of one of the vintage stations).

I was most impressed with the L.L. Bean Signature booth which had a great selection of outerwear and knitwear, all under $200! The Aether booth was also sick, with a stunning collection of cold weather outerwear that was simple and sharp. The Oliver Spencer Boutique was definitely my favorite though, as all of the pieces on display were at least 40% off of the regular prices. I scored a beautiful navy wool pea coat for $250 (sorry for the shitty picture below).

The detailing (red wool interior lapels, pinstriped lining, and adjustable waste and cuffs), the fit, and the price made it a no brainer. I would recommend checking this brand out online. Their prices are super reasonable and their design is stellar.

Next we walked down to Acne to see about their new Theo Leather Jacket that I've fallen in love with.

Of course they, along with Oak, had sold out before they even got the jackets to the store. I would say its not meant to be, but they are still available online... Early Christmas present maybe!

Speaking of early Christmas presents, my second (and last) purchase was a pair of the Franklin boots ($198) from J.D. Fisk at 159 and 1/2 Ludlow Street.

The brother brand of Dolce Vita, J.D. Fisk makes great looking shoes at comparably low prices. They also had a fine selection of Shades of Greige and Gant in store and a BILLYKIRK waxed cotton gym bag ($210) I was contemplating procuring for my dad. Alas, I did not have access to the proper funds.

Next we went two doors down to In God We Trust, where my friend purchased a silver "Cheers Mother Fucker" flask for $40. If you're looking for an inexpensive Christmas gift for a friend or family member, this is the place to go. They also have another location (with almost the exact same merchandise) on Lafayette between Prince and Spring right when you get off of the 6 train.

Somewhere in between we stopped by Opening Ceremony because is it really a day of shopping in Soho without it? We were both obsessed with the Racer jackets from the Tron x Opening Ceremony collection ($530), though we never for a second considered actually spending close to $600 on it...

Overall, a beautiful day to go shopping and some great new Fall/Winter merchandise in stores. The only thing that spoiled my day was the 11% sales tax I had to pay on my shoes (the jacket was all cash and tax free!). I later had a discussion with the sales woman at In God We Trust who told me that it was changing again come January (probably going up). I understand that the state needs money, but aren't we supposed to be encouraging shopping in such a economically challenging time?

SAVE - J. Press for UO Ribbon Belt - $28

J. Press and Urban Outfitters have collaborated on a well edited capsule collection of items fit for the closeted preppy hipster. Slim fitting shirts and pants are simple with clean lines, but the accessories are really the standouts. In particlar, these ribbon belts. As a certified W.A.S.P. myself, I can tell you that colleigiate colored ribbon belts are a necessity, but they also look great with jeans, a t-shirt, and a pair of boots. Great for adding some color to your wardrobe, and at $28, I'm getting all 3. Save.

And so the saga continues... I went to H&M today to check out the Lanvin collab and they were sold out of everything in my size (small)! The remnents clinging to the hangers looked unreal, so I will definitely be checking back to see if they have the tuxedo blazer (pictured above) back in. If you are a size large, or even medium, I would suggest heading to your nearest H&M location right away. Save.

WEEKEND WATCHING - Proenza Schouler PS1 Video

Doesn't this remind you of that old footage of UFO sightings you watched on the News as a kid? Pretty eerie.

If you don't know Proenza Schouler (pronouced Pro-enza Scoo-ler) by now then this must be the only blog you read because they are everywhere. The little fashion house that could with contemporaries like Alexander Wang and Jason Wu, the duo known as Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have taken the women's fashion world by storm with their killer wears and even better accessories (one of which, the new patent leather PS1 bag, is the subject of this video). Pick one up for your significant other this holiday season and I guarantee they won't be disappointed.

DISCLAIMER: I know I've been doing a lot of videos lately, but it certainly isn't by accident. The fashion industry has really been embracing film as a new medium to communicate their vision, whether it be through live streamed fashion shows, product videos (like this one), designer interviews (like the Dolce & Gabbana video I posted from a while back), or behind the scenes material. Personally, I love seeing these houses express their unique viewpoint through video and hope you guys enjoy it too cause this won't be the last!

TOMMY - Spring 2011 - Review

Tommy Hilfiger aims lower this season with his new diffusion line: TOMMY. Lower target audience, lower prices, and lower standards.

The new collection is clearly aimed at edgier, rock-n-roll youngsters, but what I am confused by is who would actually wear these clothes? Plaid pants with a pink tee (pictured), a two tone denim shirt with a lime green scarf, a sherbet pullover and green and white short-shorts are only a few examples of the trippy spirit that permeates this 17 look collection. Yes there are a few salvageable pieces in the faded jean jacket (pictured) and Benton striped sweaters, but the styling is truly frightening.

Tommy Hilfiger has always stood for classic American style with a twist, a mantra that has made him one of the most successful designers in the industry. That said, his effort to appeal to the fashion forward hipsters of my generation is, in theory, a great business strategy, but lacks a sophisticated execution when it comes down to the clothes themselves.

Hopefully this collection will be more appealing in person at his newly transformed Bleeker Street location in the West Village.

A pair of Chukka boots are an essential for every man's wardrobe. I would say I wear my John Varvatos pair I got a few years ago at least twice a week, and have the scuff marks and repaired soles to prove it.

This Alden tan suede, leather lined boot will go perfectly with jeans and a T-shirt, or dress pants and a sports coat. Each Alden shoe is handmade, a detail that is hard to find nowadays in the world of fast fashion and mass market retail, and one that really shows in the construction, look, and feel of the shoe. While the price tag may be alarming, the wear you'll get out of these bad boys is definitely worth it. Splurge.

SPLURGE - Balmain Shearling Jacket - $4,787

Balmain or four months rent in one of the most expensive cities in the world? For some, this is a tricky question. As scary as that might sound to some of you, take a closer look and try to understand why those with deep pockets and the weak conscious necessary to spend upwards of $3,000 on a coat, choose Balmain. Making shearling for men look rugged and masculine is no small fete, but Christopher Decarnin pulls it off in a functional coat the is dripping in sexiness. (Sell an organ and...) Splurge.

Here is a selection of my favorite pages from the Bergdorf Goodman Fall catalogue. I picked it up in the store today while I was having lunch. As I was flipping through, I was really astounded at the quality of the images and the conservative styling. Compared to a Barneys, this is pretty simple at first sight, but the quality of the clothes lies in the sophistication, fit, and details that come with the the price tags well into the thousands of dollars that populate these pages.

Who else is feeling the military trend this season? No, it's not just for girls. I just got a new Edun military parka from Bloomingdales (post to come once I get proper photographs) and I'm loving it. This season all of the designers are doing them from Acne to Marc by Marc Jacobs to Gap, which means there are plenty of options at plenty of price points [coats in collage (clockwise from top, center): Club Monaco, Burberry, Paul Smith Jeans, Barbour]. Pick one up and pair it with some jeans and boots and your good to go!

Lanvin for H&M - Lookbook

A few months ago I posted about the H&M and Lanvin collaboration that was in the works. Well the lookbook is finally here, but I'm sad to say that I have a few mixed feelings.

Right off of the bat, I was excited about the fact that H&M didn't make Lucas Ossendrijver (Lanvin's Menswear designer) skew his creative vision for the collab: a blazer with piping, fuller dress pants, and colorful patent leather shoes populate the fashionable collection that screams, "LANVIN!".

On the other hand, though those pieces are exciting, there certainly isn't anything too avant-garde. While this may seem a little contradictory to my former comment, let me explain a little further.

Lanvin is known for stylish mens pieces at exorbitant prices. They can range anywhere form a white seersucker dinner jacket, to a classic white tee bejeweled with sequins in the shape of a mosquito. This collection is no doubt Lanvin, but, unfortunately, none of my favorite pieces that I would be too afraid to buy full price trickled down. The women's collection, dissimilarly, has tons of outlandish pieces, clones of which are probably sitting in the windows of Bergdorfs or Barneys right now!

That said, I will certainly check out the more dressy options (especially the killer tuxedo jacket) to add a little pop to my wardrobe, but, overall, I don't find it exciting enough to wait online and fight some 6 foot hipster for.

SHOPPING DIARIES - October 24th, 2010

What beautiful weather we had in NYC today! Such a climate made for a perfect shopping day down in Soho, so I thought I would create this new post, entitled, "Shopping Diaries," to give you guys a better idea of where I like to shop and my opinions on the retail environment in New York.

To begin, I explored the basics at Vince and Unis, then headed across the street to scope out the vintage at Ina and later Amarcord, the fast fashion at Uniqlo on Broadway, the high fashion at Rag & Bone, and quite by accident, the perfect mix at the Florsheim pop-up on Mercer street.

The quality of Vince's offerings has steadily declined over the past few of seasons since I began shopping there a couple of years ago, though I did pick up a pair of their skinny jeans ($240, pictured at right) to put away for Christmas. Their bottoms have always been a standout and their new skinny jean cut is without a doubt the most flattering I've ever worn. And, by picking out a $42 T-Shirt, I was eligible for their Spend $250, get $50 back sale (basically, I got the T-Shirt for free).

Unis always makes a great peacoat, and I'm lusting over her grey wool offering that I showed you guys earlier in the Bloomingdales mailer.

On the vintage front, Ina had some Moncler just in for almost the same price as the current full-price coats at Barneys, and an AMAZING Burberry double breasted wool coat for around $500. I believe it's a size small as it fit me like a dream but, as you guys know from my +J post, I already picked up the Chesterfield coat at Uniqlo for almost a fourth of the price. Amarcord had some great military jackets and, as always, a fine selection of luxury dress shoes and long coats.

At Uniqlo I picked up another one of their Cashmere Cardigans, a slim corduroy blazer for $80 (!!!), and a sweatshirt that is a 100% rip off of of the Wings + Horns one pictured below. Although I feel bad buying a rip off, the fit and price ($30, compared to $200) were just too good to pass up.

Rag & Bone was pretty depressing. While their clothes look great on a runway (and everyone knows what a big fan of their Fall/Winter 2010 show I was and still am), in person and alone they just loose their life and end up looking stiff. I went in expecting to walk out with one of the Tiberland boot colabs, but alas, they did not live up to expectations. I knew it was too good to be true. Not yet completely defeated, I tried on a pair of green corduroys ($195). The fit was alright, but I just wasn't in the mood anymore.

Feeling defeated and competely bootless, I was about to make my way home before I basically walked right into the Florsheim pop-up store without even realizing it. The lofty space is clean and welcoming, with the Duckie Brown collaboration taking up the front space, a great selection of well priced accessories in the middle, and the Florsheim Limited collection in the back.

I tried on a few pairs of dress shoes and boots while I was there. The Duckie Brown shoes were a little bit too feminine for my taste, but the Florsheim Limited collection was perfect. The prices were unbelievable (almost all of the shoes were under $150), and the styles were both classic and intriguing without being too unwearable.

I picked up a pair of the Sentinel lace-ups in camel for just over $99 and a Fair-Isle cap for $65. Check out some pictures of the space and my shoe purchase below.

WEEKEND WATCHING - Kanye West "Runaway"

Weather you think Kanye West is a visionary or an asshole, his new music video is worth a watch. Clocking in at 34:32 minutes, I would classify this work as more of a musical short film than a "music video." When I think of a rap music video, I usually envision big guys in baggy clothing and tiny girls in little clothing dancing provocatively to some nonsensical lyrics, usually while money and alcohol are thrown around in some sort of display of wealth and status. While there is dancing involved, the "Runaway" video seems to include the exact opposite of what I would expect.

While Kanye West certainly likes to show off, there is no doubt that their is more to this film than girls and money. West tackles issues of race, relationships, love, lust, innocence, and power in a slew of dramatic and elegantly staged scenes with a collection of exciting new songs. And lest I forget to mention his amazing wardrobe, the likes of which we could all stand to learn something from when it comes to pulling off a great tux.

Though his acting chops could use a little work, and the story is a little outlandish, I like the idea of a music video epic. Why not make one film that encompasses every song on an album to set a tone for the record by telling a real story? So far I'm intrigued by Mr. West's little experiment and will look forward to his upcoming album and future videos.

Gap - Spring 2011 - Review

Patrick Robinson is making some big changes at Gap. Starting with this coming Spring, expect a new look at Gap stores, and I'm not just talking about the logo.

Gap is known for the all-American basics at affordable prices. A quick visit to their store on 54th street earlier this week offered a fine assortment of garments with extremely low price tags. While the quality was admirable, the selection wasn't exactly cohesive or on trend (though there was a great army green military jacket for only $99). This Spring 2011 season marks a more directional collection for the storied brand and a new opportunity for fashion lovers without funds to procure some stellar garments.

Carrot leg jeans, an unconstructed blazer, slouchy sweatshirts, and a nylon windbreaker are just some of the few subtle but statement-making pieces in a muted blue, black and grey pallet that will appear in stores come 2011.

SPLURGE - Acne Utility Jacket - $450

This waterproof cotton utility jacket from Acne is a great looking take on the classic safari jacket for Fall. Available in navy and beige with a black and grey detachable hoods (respectively), this jacket is full of stylish details. A hidden front zipper, contrasting snap closures, drawstring hood and waist, and elbow patches are only some of the features that adorn this garment. Make sure to check out the jacket in person at Acne' store on Green Street in Soho. Splurge.

SAVE - Uniqlo Cashmere Cardigan - $150

A cashmere cardigan is one of my favorite Fall/Winter wardrobe staples. Once a luxury, Uniqlo has produced their own slim fit version in 100% cashmere for just $150. The cardigan is offered in navy, charcoal, light grey, camel, and black. Although the cardigan is one of their most expensive items in the store (save the +J collection), it's with good reason; the sweaters are thick, soft, and fit perfectly. If $150 is still out of your price range, there is a lambswool version for $40. Save.

SPLURGE - Nixon 51-30 Watch - $400 to $500

In a previous post I tackled what to wear on the wrist jewelry wise, but to me, a man really needs a good watch. Something simple, masculine, functional, and above all, appropriate for many events and situations.

Nixon is an amazing watch maker that I've posted about before. Their 51-30 model comes in a slew of different color and material combinations for both flashy and conservative customers.

Their "Gunship" model with red hands over a black face is more casual and sporty, while the "High Polish/ White Face" model is great for more dressy occasions. I'm a fan of "Black" model with steel band and black face because of its versatility, but you really can't go wrong here. With stainless steal casing, a stylish design, and an easy to read face, this is the perfect timepiece for every guy. Splurge.

SPLURGE - Opening Ceremony Blazer - $520

Opening Ceremony's in house collection turns out an interesting group of pieces each season. While a lot of it is a little too avant-garde for my taste, I am obsessed with their Professor Blazer with arm patches available in khaki or brown. This season there inspiration stemmed from both the UK and France, a fact that is evident in this tailored offering.

The proportions are slim and youthful, the color is season-less, and the design is thoughtful and classic. And, it's all made here in the USA. Perfect for a chill Fall day downtown, or a casual dinner out with friends. Splurge.

The opening of the new Barneys CO-OP location on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn coincides with the luxury department store chain's 25th anniversary. In celebration of both events, Barneys has collaborated with some of their favorite CO-OP designers to produce a collection of limited edition items for the new store.

Alas, the Alexander Wang backpack, though in my opinion completely unisex, is WAY overpriced. As a consolation, these Super Sunglasses, made in Italy, are just as much of a style statement and equally as chic. Don't forget, the sun still shines in the winter! Splurge.

SAVE - +J Fall/Winter Collection

Jil Sander has gone dressy for her +J Fall/Winter collection for Uniqlo. Windbreakers and parkas are inspired by blazers, and outerwear, such as the Chesterfield wool flannel coat (pictured above), would work beautifully over a suit. Speaking of suits, +J has produced the only suit you'll ever need for this winter. Slim, charcoal grey, and under $300, it's a must have. The down quilted jacket (pictured below) is reminiscent of Thom Browne's puffer snap button coats for Moncler Gamme Bleu two seasons ago, and at a fraction of the price.

With a superior fit, technical fabrics, and minimalist design aesthetic, this +J collection is sure to fly off of the racks. Available at the Uniqlo Soho flagship starting October 15.

UPDATE: I purchased the Chesterfield coat on Friday and it is AMAZING! Definitely a must have for Fall and even Winter. The cut is slim and flattering, and the length will add refinement and sophistication to any outfit. The lining is also incredibly comfortable, while the wool/flannel on the outside is super soft.

SPLURGE - Varsity Jackets

Some big names in menswear are offering their take on the varsity (or letterman) jacket for this Fall/Winter season. The varsity jacket usually consists of a wool body with contrasting leather arms, though it can be all leather. It appears that most of the varsity jackets we are seeing are in some black and grey combination for a more subtle statement, though there are a few more elaborate takes.

Vince has the most basic offering with a charcoal wool body and heavy dark leather arms. Shipley & Halmos's jacket has a simple appearance but becomes quite elaborate when one examines the construction and leather details on the back and arms. Thom Browne has the most uninvolved model with a letterman jacket that looks straight out of Friday Night Lights (minus the panther). Fred Perry, on the other hand, has taken the classic design and made it modern for Opening Ceremony with a black plaid patterne (a la Pendleton) for the body. Tim Hamilton Redux offers the most fashion forward option with a body comparable to that of Vince and Shipley & Halmos, accented with shiny metallic arms and collar.

While one can certainly find a vintage varsity jacket for far less money than these options, I prefer the trimmer and more anonymous look myself. Splurge.

Gant by Michael Bastian - Spring 2011 - Review

For Fall, Michael Bastian took the whole Lacrosse theme/ Gant branding a little to far. Mistakes are to be expected in a first collection, but I just can't get over all of the beautiful rugby's and sweaters that I had to put back on the rack because they had "F.O.G.O." on the back or Gant embossed buttons on the front. The good news is that it appears, and I can only judge from the press photos, that he has learned his lesson.

Bastian's Spring 2011 showing was strictly preppy graduate heads to his beach house for the summer. Every garment walks the line between fashionable and masculine, a tightrope that Mr. Bastian has been sauntering down in his eponymous line for many seasons now.

Standouts included ripped jean shorts (pictured), a salmon denim jacket, a yellow rain slicker, and a blue and red henley. The good news for the Gant man versus the Bastian man is that these pieces won't cost as much as the down payment on his beach house.

Michael Bastian - Spring 2011 - Review

Preppy goes to the beach for Spring at Michael Bastian. That means everything from skin tight speedos to nautical themed sweaters paired with the usual bomber jacket, short short, trim blazer, cargo pant mashup that Bastian has become famous for.

While the first half of the show was a welcomed jolt, with all of the high powered colors and striking proportions, the second half did not contain the same energy, though it did offer some beautiful suiting options for Spring. A coal colored mac coat with a blue button down and white pants was sophisticated but predicable, as was a double breasted vest and grey pants.

Although the scuba sweaters could be seen as somewhat gimmicky, Bastian, whose clothes have always had a certain cheekiness to them, pulls it off with ease. Otherwise, I am already lusting for the green army jacket that opened the show, the yellow and black striped rugby, the sunburst cashmere crew neck sweater, and the corduroy shorts. Maybe I'll find a chest full of gold on my next scuba adventure to be able to afford them.

Marc by Marc Jacobs - Spring 2011 - Review

Looks as if the Marc by Marc Jacobs boy has finally become a man. Or did he just get a summer job because the economy is down? I guess "just being cool" wasn't paying the rent...

But what exactly would a grown up Marc by Marc Jacobs customer look like? Turn your eyes to the Spring 2011 collection. A sleeveless trench coats, paper bag chinos, a grey suit, a rust colored car coat, and even the odd tie were present, creating a work friendly wardrobe suitable for any sartorial post-grad. Of course, the top button is always undone, the tie is tied loose, and the shirt untucked. It appears as if he just woke up, ran his fingers through his hair and grabbed the nearest suit for his interview. What else do you expect?

Despite the aging there were the trademarc (pun) bright colors on polos, dress shirts and sweaters, as well as a handful of chic accessories. Of course he wears a sneaker with a suit to the office.

SPLURGE - Penfield Down Vest - $220

This fall is shaping up to be perfect vest weather, so it's only fitting that every man find a great one. Vests are perfect for that little extra bit of warmth on those chilly days over a sweater, or even a blazer if you're heading to the office or a more formal event.

This Penfield vest is equal parts simple and stylish. The goose down interior provides warmth while the wool and viscose (made to look like leather) exterior makes it a subtly style statement.

Penfield has specialized in durable down filled outerwear since 1975, and considering that designer vests can cost you as much as $600, I would snap this one up right away guys. Save.

Michael Kors - Spring 2011 - Review

I have to admit that about half of my closet it Michael Kors. The soft cashmere and cotton basics he produces alongside his runway collection are somewhat comparable to Vince in their subtle style conscious effect. While Mr. Kors' runway shows usually influence the basics for the season, it appear it's the other way around for this Spring.

Spring 2011 offers a relaxed vibe and relaxed garments; somewhat too relaxed. Was it just me, or did everything that walked the runway look two sizes too big? I found the wide-legged linen pants made the models look as if they had just woken up and thrown a robe (or trench in one case) over their pajamas to get the paper off of the stoop. Definitely not a glamorous moment for anyone, even if their sleepwear is Michael Kors.

The earthy khaki that dominated most of the pieces looked washed out, while the pops of bright blue (which were also seen at Phillip Lim) and mustard felt awkward. That said, I did enjoy the navy and grey moments, though they weren't anything ground breaking.

At the end of it all I was left wondering where all the creativity and luxury had gone. Last season Mr. Kors gave us military luxe, while this season seems more like the before shot in the most recent GQ office-wear editorial.

SAVE - Bloomingdales Fingerless Gloves - $58

I've been on the hunt for a suitable pair of fingerless gloves for a while now. Gloves with fingers, as crazy as it may sound, are somewhat limiting. Though they do keep your fingertips nice and warm, fingerless gloves allow you to not only zip up your jacket (a task that can seem rather daunting with a thick pair of regular gloves on), but also work your iPhone. Plus, fingerless gloves just look rugged and badass.

These gloves, from the Bloomingdales Men's Store collection, are great looking, functional (they can be converted into mittens for those extra nippy days), and super affordable. Save.

My dad has been in desperate need of an acceptable substitute to the blue and black Nike gym bag he carries to and fro work every day. Littered with files, notes, and gym clothes, the thing was a complete mess and made him look like the before shot in a GQ style page. As a result, I recently bought him a black leather Tumi briefcase. If you didn't know, Tumi doesn't come cheap. Although it looks great, he still complains that it is too nice to throw all of his gym clothes in and shove in a locker at the Equinox. That's where this Wm. J Mills & Co. Canvas bag will come in.

This stylish canvas model is roomy and durable, but not too precious that one would feel akward slinging it over their shoulder on the way to the free weights. If you haven't yet found your winter coat, look no further. I stumbled upon this Billy number at Bloomingdales and haven't stopped thinking about it since I saw the price tag. $395 for a shearling lined, waxed cotton pea coat? Where do I sign? I've deemed it a splurge because it's still not exactly an impulse buy, but compared to four digit prices of the coats in the outerwear section ($999 and up for a Moncler), I would call this a serious save.

The waxed cotton ensures that you will be completely dry come rainy or snowy days, and the shearling provides warmth and comfort. I would recommend buying a size up to allow for the layering of sweaters and the like. Splurge.

Billy Reid - Spring 2011 - Review

Billy Reid is the master of southern charm. Every article of clothing he produces for his eponymous label just oozes it. No matter if it's a brown leather jacket, khakis, or a double breasted blazer, Mr. Reid cannot help but inject his southern roots into his collections, and this certainly isn't me complaining about it.

That said, there were some odd moments in this collection. T-shirts tucked into high wasted khakis created a look that couldn't even flatter the model, and the layering of jackets over sweaters over oxfords puzzled me for a Spring collection. All in all though, every piece in the collection was wearable and contemporary (save the khakis) with a hint of boyishness in the styling.

Standouts looks included a grey double breasted blazer paired with green dress pants, a brown checked blazer over a green polo with khaki shorts, and a brown utility vest over a denim jacket. Each look could be seen either at a backyard barbecue, a cocktail party at the family estate, or a fishing trip with the boys. Ah the life of a southern gentleman.

SPLURGE - James Perse Parachute Pants - $225

This Christmas break I will be heading to Egypt with a few family and friends for a boat trip down the Nile. This means that I have been searching for the perfect pair of drawstring pants to come along with me. My criteria: lightweight, good looking, versatile, slim fit, and cheap. These James Perse Parachute Pants meet all but one of those standards (can you guess which one?).

The color is a beautiful faded green with contrasting black ties at the waist, the parachute material is incredibly lightweight and comfortable (great for those long days in the hot desert sun), and the cargo pockets will be handy for cameras, wallets, and sunglasses (among many other things I'm sure). Also, the fit stellar with a comfortable waste and a slim fit throughout the leg. I'm convinced I'll wear them all summer long, but if not, at least they'll have a great run over my 10 days in Egypt. Splurge.

Antonio Azzuolo - Spring 2011 - Review

Antonio Azzuolo is known for his quirky take on men's tailoring, producing beautiful suits and separates with looks ranging from fur lapeled sports jackets to western inspired nordic sweaters.

This collection looked to be inspired by both the gentlemen of the 1850's and the prepsters of Take Ivy. Bowler hats and suspenders were paired with Azzuolo's take on the anorak and varsity jacket, as well as cardigans in a series of electric colors. My favorite pieces included a thick striped shawl collar cardigan and a navy safari jacket.

While the individual looks were unmistakably Antonio Azzuolo, the collection as a whole felt less focused than his previous efforts. While Azzuolo usually tends to pick a theme and stick to it, the multiple references of this collection contributed to a feeling of disjointedness.

Or maybe this was a result of his shift in focus towards more sportswear inspired looks as opposed to his mostly formalwear heavy collections of the past. Dress trousers and button downs were replaced with shorts and tees this season, creating a half-baked look lacking his trademark playful sophistication. While I appreciate the effort, this collection demonstrates that Mr. Azzuolo hasn't quite found his footing in the casual-wear world just yet.

Though this collection wasn't his strongest, I look forward to next season to see whether Mr. Azzuolo continues this casual idea further. I have complete confidence in his design ability which is why I am sure that with some tweaking, Mr. Azzuolo can master a more laid back cool for his customer.

Simon Spurr - Spring 2011 - Review

Simon Spurr has, in the past 5 seasons, developed a menswear brand with a coherent message, sophisticated clothing, and a clear customer. This Spring 2011 collection only further served to establish the Spurr brand as a powerhouse in menswear.

Each piece that walked the runway, whether it was the the T-shirts, blazers, suits, jackets, or jeans, was expertly tailored and perfectly simple. All the of the pieces, together, formed the building blocks of a great wardrobe. These included a nylon/leather combo jacket, a silver suit jacket, a grey anorak parka, and some of the best looking raw denim jeans I have seen in a while.

Don't expect to see any initials or logos here, as all of Mr. Spurr's pieces continue to remain anonymous, letting the design and fit speak for themselves. While it seems the rock star trend is well and alive in Mr. Spurr's eyes, his clothes remain wearable. It seems the only thing intimidating about these pieces is their price tag.

SIDE NOTE: This season marks the rebranding of the Spurr label for this Fall and upcoming Spring season. From now on there will be two lines under the Simon Spurr name: Simon Spurr and Spurr. Each lines will produce similar clothing (in some cases, almost the exact same styles), but the more upscale Simon Spurr line will sport both a Made in Italy label and a much steeper price tag.

Tommy Hilfiger - Spring 2011 - Review

Over the past quarter of a century, Tommy Hilfiger has achieved design celebrity, fallen into obscurity, re-invented himself, and just this year, been acquired by one of the largest retail companies in the world, Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation, for $3 Billion. 25 years later and Tommy Hilfiger is still the king of preppy Americana with a twist, and this collection is no exception.

Color was center stage in this collection that would look equally at home in William's Town as it would in the West Village. A classic khaki suit was paired with a pink sweater, a candy green belt, purple shoes, and leopard loafers, while a linen utility shirt was styled with salmon pants, a yellow belt and socks, and blue dress shoes. There were Tommy classics in the form of a peacoat, khakis, and a trench, but they were made all the more exciting when paired with these outlandish hues.

What will remain throughout every collection that Tommy Hilfiger designs is his innate ability to produce wearable clothes. Spring 2011 shows Hilfiger's ability to push his man to his preppy limits.

Band of Outsiders - Spring 2011 - Review

Beach umbrellas, bunks and ping pong tables acted as the backdrop for Scott Sternberg's Spring 2011 presentation for Band of Outsiders. It appears as if his muse is hitting the beach in the South of France before heading off to summer camp, and then back to New York for a quick game at SPiN before the drive out to the Hamptons for Labor Day.

Band of Outsiders has made its mark on the fashion industry as the go to for school boy blazers, polo shirts, and generally preppy tongue in cheek, sophisticated garments. This collection managed to both live up to expectations as well as expand with new offerings that are sure to be a hit with the Band of Outsiders customer (i.e. me), come Spring.

Their signature plaid shirts and striped polos were paired with the usual shorts, anoraks, and boat shoes in mostly primary colors, though, there were a few new pieces to shake things up. A suede varsity jacket was an unexpected and delightful side note, while a black leather jacket looked like effortless summer city chic with matching black drawstring shorts and bright yellow boat shoes. Lest we forget the pocket henleys, which are sure to become a hipster staple come March.

Of course the prices are always outrageous, but the Band of Outsiders man will always have that X factor: His pants are cuffed just so, his colors are somewhat mismatched, and he wears the Sperry collaboration boat shoes everywhere, and looks great doing it all. My experience with the brand has accumulated in this realization: "Don't underestimate a great polo shirt."

Specializing in vintage inspired jeans at exorbitant prices (a pair can run up to $500), Gilded Age has carved out a niche in the marketplace for the man that values a nice worn in wardrobe of American classics. That means everything from a plaid button down, to a tarnished leather belt, to a great pair of casual khakis, to a jean jacket. The best part? It's all hand made right here in the U.S.A. on some of the oldest machinery still available today. "Mass production - it is not!" reads the slogan on their website.

Gilded Age does masculine style like no other brand I've seen in a while. I would most readily compare it to Ralph Lauren's rugged RRL. The two brands are about as similar as they are different, but what Gilded Age has going for it that Ralph Lauren will never be able to replicate is its authenticity. The use of natural dyes, organic cottons, and skilled craftsman are what makes these garments all unique and covetable.

All of these elements shine through in their Spring 2011 runway presentation. Workwear met beachwear in this deliciously wearable and effortlessly chic collection. Hawaiian shirts were layered under denim shirts, and flower necklaces were draped over khaki utility jackets. Somehow tan leather jackets (an emerging trend for this season) didn't feel out of place. The jeans were, of course, expertly washed, worn, and styled; cuffed just above the ankle and worn with moccasins or unlaced lace-ups, they were totally summer cool.

Granted, this collection is 100% my style (minus the hawaiian shirts), but I would have to say that Gilded Age has produced one of the best collections yet for this Spring season.

Edun - Spring 2011 - Review

Stylish, eco-friendly clothing? What was once a fashion oxymoron has finally been realized in the Spring 2011 collection for Edun. Although 15% of the collection is produced in Africa, you wouldn't know it from the urban looking styles that walked the runway.

Intricately woven sweaters were the standout pieces, paired with baggy pants and scarves. Overall, the line was dark and subtle with stylish options that will leave you with a clean environmental conscience.

3.1 Phillip Lim - Spring 2011 - Review

When planning your minimalist cool wardrobe this spring, head to Phillip Lim first. Though not quite my taste (though almost all of his past Fall collection was), that doesn't mean I don't appreciate his clean tailoring and effortless chic. Though, it must be said that this is certainly one of the more directional collections than Mr. Lim has created.

Everything about this collection was slim and stylish, with details like electric blue pocket squares, cropped sleeves, collarless button downs, and embroidery that served to carry on the Phillip Lim trademark: modern elegance with a twist at a upper-middle tier price point.

Some highlights included a double breasted black leather trench with cropped sleaves revealing a stripped shirt, a white sleeveless belted military jacket in white paired with a black sweater and white pants, and a blue bomber jacket, the latter of which I would invest in for 2011.

Lim also stepped up his accessory game this season. There was an array of man jewelry, sunglasses, belts, and scarves, as well as the odd bag in the form of portfolios, duffles, totes, and backpacks, all in materials ranging from classic leather to nylon. Phillip Lim is slowly building a menswear empire. With designs like these he is quickly on his way.

Patrik Ervell - Spring 2011 - Review

Patrik Ervell stuck to what he does best for Spring 2011: stunningly slim and boyish suits and jackets, elegant outerwear, and rounded collar button up shirts. While I'm not exactly disappointed by this collection, I am most certainly underwhelmed.

If I could own everything Mr. Ervell produces, I would certainly be a happy camper, but at the end of this brief collection I am left wondering, "Where is the runway?" This is a runway presentation is it not? To me, these garments look as if they are walking straight from the runway into stores. While it's all well and good to be wearable, this simply lacks pizzaz!

Yes, everything looks great, the colors are gorgeous, and the fit is impeccable, but one needs to find the medium between the outlandishness of Rag & Bone's Spring 2011 showing, and the controlled nature of this collection. I've seen it done many times this season, so it makes me question the necessity of showing for these designers who present less of a lifestyle that must be communicated on a runway than they do simply elegant clothes.

At the end of the day, I'll still be a Patrik Ervell customer. I would die for the navy car coat, the black blazer, and the tan crew neck sweater. While he hasn't moved in any new direction or taken any risks, his clothes are still chic. They simply have more hanger appeal than they do runway appeal.

Robert Geller - Spring 2011 - Review

For Spring 2011, Robert Geller has produced one of his most wearable and beautiful collections to date. While Mr. Geller always provides intrigue on the runway with everything from fur chubbies to graphic black and white pinstripe pants in past collections, this season he managed to supply creativity, mostly in the form of expert styling and a few statement looks, as well as wearability within the individual pieces.

Beautiful leathers, for example, came in classic blacks as well as maroons, supplying looks for both the fashion risk takers that have come to covet Mr. Geller's collections, as well as the conservative customers that look for more basic garments with fine design.

The palette consisted of mostly maroons, army greens, and khakis, colors that are both on trend and long lasting in a man's wardrobe. My favorite looks included an oatmeal colored cardigan over a green jumpsuit, a denim work shirt paired with faded jeans and a military parka, as well as a green zip-up vest over a simple white tee and cuffed khakis. While they may sound rudimentary (save the jumpsuit), Mr. Geller finds a way, whether it is with an elaborate scarf or simply just unparalleled design prowess, to make his clothes look anything but ordinary.

Rag & Bone - Spring 2011 - Review

Gone are the days of slim fit tailoring at Rag & Bone. In a move to further embrace their American Workwear roots, David Neville and Marcus Wainwright have designed a collection centered around durable, denim Americana, with a somewhat dark twist. This means denim overalls, leather car coats, and indigo work shirts. Although the collection does do workwear fabrics justice, it fails to be anywhere near as wearable or covetable as the Fall 2010 collection that just hit stores.

A closer look at the 29 looks further demonstrates denim's influence on the Rag & Bone boys, even if it was not present in every single look that took the runway earlier this week. The models paraded out in blue looks made up of everything from a denim poncho, to an Alexander McQueen-esque printed button up, to a denim onesie. For the last 6 or so looks, shots of color in the form of bright orange, mustard yellow and turquoise were injected into garments. Although this did create energy, it only further puzzled me.

At this point, I'm scratching my head and thinking, "When did Rag & Bone become a gothic, fashion forward label specializing in pieces made for the runway that eventually get dumbed down in stores?" What I've come to love about Rag & Bone is that, on almost every occasion, what you see is what you get. With the exception of a suede and shearling vest that I couldn't get the salesman to sell me off of the mannequin last week (just another example of my devotion to this label), almost everything that walked the runway for Fall 2010 made it into the stores (much to my delight might I add). Just the other night I was scheming of ways to earn a few thousand extra dollars (jokes) so that I could clothe myself completely in Rag & Bone. I know that's a big fashion misstep to wear head-to-toe, but why not? They make basics better and standout pieces at reasonable prices. Why would they change their formula now after a season so adored by editors, celebrities, and buyers alike?

When it's all over I am left disappointed. The label I turn to for chic cardigans, great outerwear, and luxe basics has done a 180, leaving me with baggy jeans, loud prints, and ridiculous garments fit more for a serviceman than an off duty model. Of course I'll be interested to see what actually get's bought and used for editorial but all I can ask is this: Who is the Rag & Bone man now?

Steven Alan - Spring 2011 - Review

Spring 2011 continues with a decisively laid back vibe at Steven Alan. For his first full scale presentation, Alan chose to showcase his breezy men's and women's looks on a wooden plank-board stage, making the vision of lazy days on Wyandanch beach and dinner parties at the Family lake house all too clear.

Although he is famous for his shirting, it seems Mr. Alan is more focused on other separates, specifically outerwear, for the warmer months of 2011. A khaki trench, a blue bomber and a silver windbreaker were among the standout jackets, adding just enough edge to the rather simple looks. Accessories also served to add flair: sunglasses, tote bags, sun hats, and espadrilles are all must haves.

The neutral color palette will be right at home with the Steven Alan customer, and I have no doubt that his famous plaids will end up in stores come Spring.

Filson x Levi's

Super American heritage brands collide in this collaboration between Filson and Levi's. Filson recently made a comeback in fashion circles with its chic luggage (a staple for hipsters in the workforce), while Levi's has continued to reinvent itself and stay current, especially in a world obsessed with "vintage" and storied brands.

In this case, Filson has made three pieces based on some of their bestselling goods exclusively for Levi's. So you can probably infer from my last 5 or 6 posts that my Fall/Winter wardrobe is really coming together. Of course I already have all of the basics (plaid shirts, tees, dark jeans), but every season I like to purchase a few statement pieces to get me through the coming months. Usually it's a jacket (I love a good jacket), but sometimes it can be a blazer, a great pair of pants, the perfect sweater, or some interesting jeans.

I put together this collage to give you guys a look at my personal style. I would probably classify myself as a modern prepster with an urban edge, and these are all looks that I feel represent that.

It's difficult to find the perfect pair of boots to last you through the Fall and Winter. This is because they need to do a lot: 1) Look good; 2) Go with most everything; 3) Stand the rough New York weather (cold, snow, rain, sleet, hail, etc.); 4) Be comfortable; 5) and last but not least, again, LOOK GOOD! This means not too high, not too low, not too many bells and whistles, the right color, the right fit, and on and on.

Each comes with a distinctive black and white Missoni print and brown leather detailing on the tongue, toe, and interior. I'm partial to the more zig-zag print (above), but I think both look great. Lanvin for H&M

The upcoming collaboration between the chic French house Lanvin and the Swedish fast fashion power H&M will also include a host of men's clothing designed by Lanvin's Lucas Ossendrijver. If you haven't yet, take a look at Lanvin's menswear presentation for Fall 2010 either online, or even better, in store (I suggest Bergdorf for the best selection). Embelished tees, intricate biker jacket meets car coats, and sharply tailored dresswear abound. Hopefully Ossendrijver has enough creative freedom to do something along the same lines.

The collection will be unveiled November 2nd and released on November 23rd.

SAVE - Obey Iggy Field Jacket - $158

Military inspired jackets for fall is one trend that I am 100% excited to embrace. One of my style icons, Tomas Maier, has been sporting his Bottega Veneta style for a few seasons now, so the minute I saw a Save Khaki version for $210 at Barneys I snapped it up. The only regret I have is acting too soon, as mine is not nearly substantial or cheap as this Obey Jacket.

I've had a lot of success with Obey in the past. Their wears are simple and stylish and have a quality in design that in no way correlates to their shockingly low prices. This jacket, available through the link above at Urban Outfitters, is a particularly exciting find. Save.

A recent trip to their website proved me wrong and offered up this stylish utility cardi (cardigan). Fall Buy - Barneys, Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman

Earlier this week I hit my three favorite B's (Barney's, Bergdorf, Bloomingdales) for you guys in search of the best buys for Fall 2010. This fall will be all about the play on workwear and military inspired garments mixed with lush knits. I've tried to find garments that are not too trendy and will give you the most wear for their price.

Barneys:

My trip to Barneys began and ended with my search for the perfect toggle coat. While the classic Barbour or Peter Elliot option is certainly viable, I'm looking for something a little bit more modern, and a little less bulky.

This Gloverall coat was interesting, but still restrained with the exception of the leather panels on the upper chest. At almost $600, I was hesitant.

The search was over, though, when I came across this Oliver Spencer version. Priced at $100 less than the Gloverall (probably the best price in the whole store), this option is much more intriguing (plaid with contrasting brown leather detailing), light, and fitted. Ladies and gentleman, we have a winner! Sorry the picture is quite blurry, but I had to be secretive. Barneys is strict about the whole taking photos thing in case you didn't know.

Bloomingdales:

Bloomingdales has really stepped it up this season. Usually their men's selection is one of three things: extremely basic (they specialize in mountains of Theory, always for sale), incredibly outlandish ($2000 Marc Jacobs vests anyone?), or cheap. I guess I didn't give them enough credit because their fall men's wears are, for the most part, reasonably priced, on trend, and chic. Here are some examples:

John Varvatos Toggle Cardigan (Around $700)

Michael Kors Khaki Jacket with Grey Hoodie Insert (Around $325)

Comme des Garçons Parka ($1,100)

Paul Smith Fair Isle Sweater (Around $275)

Moncler Hidden Hood Parka (Around $780)

I think the John Varvatos sweater is a great statement piece, the Michael Kor's jacket is warm and the perfect take on workwear, the Comme des Garçons parka is full of design details (EX: a plaid patch on the upper back and rich brown leather elbow patches), the Paul Smith sweater is chic and phenomenally priced, and the Moncler coat is comfortable and simple.

Bergdorf Goodman:

BG was pretty dry with the occasional breath-taking piece that I could never afford, though I did manage to find a nice Lanvin scarf (still ridiculous at around $300), and some really cool bracelets.

At the end of the day, I'm going back for the Oliver Spencer Coat, the Paul Smith Sweater, and possibly a Moncler OR the Comme des Garçons jacket. Where the money is coming from for all of these is still a mystery...

Splurge - Fall Shoes

For fall I always look for a dress sneaker, a casual sneaker, a boot, and a loafer/driving shoe. This season presents a perfect option for each one of these categories. It's clear that they are all very expensive shoes, but there is something about a great shoe that is hard to find. My shoe needs to compliment everything in my closet while retaining it's own voice and standing out so that I get some bang for my buck. Here, I present my picks for Fall in every category. Splurge.

Dress Sneaker: Trussardi 1911 High-Top Sneaker - $526

This Trussardi high top is classic and stylish. The plaid works perfectly with the black leather, and the white laces and sole lighten it all up and provide a nice contrast. This shoe would look great with a pair of dress pants or some skinny dark jeans and a dress shirt.

Casual Sneaker: Common Projects Zip-Up Sneaker - $385

The zip is a cool detail and the two tone gives it a little edge. On the other hand, white and grey go with everything and their design durability ensures that these sneakers will only look better with wear.

Boot: Sorel Caribou x colette Snow Boot - $322

Sorel Caribou make the classic snow boot. Through their collaboration with colette, they have updated the boot into something that will look classic with any winter look, while still delivering pop by way of the neon laces.

Loafer/ Driving Shoe: Tod's Moccasin - $425

Tod's make, hands down, my favorite driving shoe loafer. I would probably go with the grey for everyday wear, but the red and green could definitely be a chic statement.

Va-ca Essentials and a Summer SAVE

My posting has been a little irregular lately due to my extended stay in the Bahamas. No, I'm not in Atlantis, I'm in my favorite place in the world: Harbour Island. Here is a quick look at my Va-ca (vacation) essentials. Fortunately and unfortunately, Fall is approaching, and with it comes blustery days, slight chills and school, all of which this Uniqlo Coated Military Jacket will be perfect for. At $49.90, this is a complete steal, especially if, like me, you are in the market for an updated bomber jacket that doesn't cost you a year of college tuition. I'm in love with the color and will most certainly be picking one up at the Uniqlo Soho flagship store come my return to the city. Save.

SPLURGE -King Baby Bracelet - $170

Man jewelry. To wear or not to wear? My personal stance: Acceptable in small doses for bracelets and on a strict case by case basis for necklaces. What I find with most of my guy friends (and myself to some extent, though I've never worn a man-necklace) is that they find a super cool bracelet or necklace, generally with some sort of bone or skull on it, wear it for a week, and eventually abandon it because it's too much.

I prefer a simple beaded or woven bracelet in a brown or black to add a little texture to an outfit. For example, this King Baby Bracelet. The black beads are masculine, and the sterling silver skull charm is perfectly sized and perfectly badass. Worn on the same wrist as a sharp black watch (casual or dressy), this accessory should perfectly complement anything and everything in your closet. Splurge.
